چکیده

We have measured the turbidity for a series of solutions of polymethylmethacrylate in 3-octanone ~PMMA/3-OCT! with various polymer molecular weights. The obtained correlation length ~j! and the osmotic compressibility ~x! show power law dependence on both the reduced temperature e 5(T2Tc)/Tc and the degree of polymerization N of the polymer chains, i.e., j;N e and x;Ne, with the associated scaling exponents in good agreement with theoretical predictions. When the results of the present experiment are combined with those from an earlier coexistence curve measurement @K.-Q. Xia, X.-Q. An, and W.-G. Shen, J. Chem. Phys. 105, 6018 ~1996!#, it is found that the concept of two-scale-factor universality applies to systems consist of the same polymer/solvent pair but with different molecular weights. © 1997 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-9606~97!51030-0#

Characterization of PMMA–3-octanone binary by turbidity and light scattering measurements

We measure the coexistence curve and the critical point properties of a binary mixture composed by polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) at Mw = 55900 g/mol with 3octanone. This binary mixture which has a demixing transition with an upper critical solution temperature Tc has indeed interesting properties which may be useful for several application : a) its correlation length is larger than that of a li...

Modeling and Optimization of the Coagulation–Flocculation Process in Turbidity Removal from Aqueous Solutions Using Rice Starch

Natural coagulants have received much attention for turbidity removal, thanks to their environmental friendliness. The present study investigates potential application of rice starch for removal of turbidity from aqueous solutions. It considers the effects of four main factors, namely settling time (40-140 min), pH (2-8), slow stirring speed (20-60 rpm), and rice starch dosage (0-200 mg/L), eac...

Polymethylmethacrylate/Silver Nanocomposite Prepared by γ-Ray

Polymethylmethacrylate-silver (PMMA/Ag) nanocomposite is synthesized by irradiating the solution of silver ions in methylmethacrylate monomer by γ-ray. In this method, polymerization of the methylmethacrylate monomer and the silver ion reduction occurred simultaneously. Optical properties of the PMMA/Ag solutions are investigated using UV-Vis spectroscopy. The structural characterizations of th...

Epithelialization Over a Scaffold of Antibiotic-Impregnated PMMA Beads: A Salvage Technique for Open Tibial Fractures with Bone and Soft Tissue Loss When all Else Fails

The management of soft tissue defects in tibial fractures is essential for limb preservation. Current techniques are not without complications and may lead to poor functional outcomes. A salvage method is described using three illustrative cases whereby a combination of flaps and antibiotic-impregnated polymethylmethacrylate beads are employed to fill the bony defect, fight the infection, and...
